Life With Pet Ferrets Video

I just saw this older video for the first time today, and thought it was cute. The audio and editing are charming, and the video captures several quirks and that essential “ferret-ness” well. File this one under “Good Videos for Anyone New To Ferrets”.

Ferrets want to go OUT!

I like the title of this one too. If you’re not subscribed to mojaemon’s Ferret Channel on YouTube you can do so HERE.

Ferret Tail Wagging Videos

Many people don’t know it, but ferrets CAN wag their tails! Here are some cute videos showing off the trait. The first one is unusual both in the object of interest and exposure of the ferret. The wagging instinct is normally revealed when the ferret sees “prey” in a small dark or enclosed space, such as a tube.

Ferret Steals Tub Drain

My ferret friends have stolen such disparate objects as tennis balls, small stuffed animals, raw bell peppers and potatoes (!), shoes, car keys, film canisters, tiny blocks of wood, my socks, my bras, my wallet, my roommate’s sweater . . . it can be hard to predict which things a ferret may take a liking to and need to tuck away.

Ferret Gate Review – Supergate Clear Choice XT

We bought two of these pressure-mount “gates” (they don’t swing, so I prefer to call them barriers) from Amazon three years ago. After daily use and abuse, they are still going strong and thwarting our most acrobatic ferret- not bad for a $30 gate!

Customizable Ferret Mug

I’ve been starting (ever so slowly!) to create ferret products on Zazzle that include customizable text or images. For example, I thought people might like the ability to add their own phrase inside the heart on this mug -

To customize the text, just go to the product at Zazzle and click the orange “Customize It” button beneath the product. You will see each design element on a tab to the right of the product. Click on “Change Text” on the “Ferrets warm the heart” tab. Change it to anything you like! You can also remove or change the images, or add your own design elements.

This is a very cool feature in Zazzle that not enough people utilize- myself included! You can technically do this with all of the products in the Renaissance Ferret Zazzle Store, but I’ll try to title the ones that are easiest to customize accordingly to help you find them.

Feel free to contact me or leave a comment if you have any special requests for ferret art or products :)

Soft-sided Ferret Crate – Bergan Comfort Carrier

I bought the small black Bergan Comfort Carrier ($36 in the dog section at Petsmart) after my little beasts finally tore a hole in their old carrying crate. After using it for over two years I can report that this is a great, durable little bag for taking one or two ferrets out for short excursions. (I use a larger hard crate with hammock, food & water bowls, and litter box for longer trips.) My boys love going out for walks in this crate and run to climb in whenever I jingle their harness bells and set the crate on the floor.

MultiVet SlimCat Food Distributor Ball

I’ve tried other “work for treat” devices with my ferrets in the past, and none were ever easy enough to get or hold a ferret’s attention. Most fuzzies just aren’t that motivated by food rewards. This adjustable ball is the first one that has ever worked! We loaded it up with some kibble and a couple of cut-up treats, set it to an easy setting (ie- bigger holes), and gave it to him. He figured it out in seconds, and then spent five minutes rolling it around to get every piece of food out. Now I’m gradually decreasing the size of the holes to make it slightly more challenging each day.

*Please note- ferrets should never be fed primary food this way, only treats or “secondary kibble”- always provide access to plenty of regular food as well. I never place more than a single day’s treat quota in the ball; usually a single cut-up piece of Wellness Chicken and Lamb Jerky Cat Treat, a tiny cut-up piece of VitaKitty Chicken Breast Cat Treat, about 1/6th of a Zupreem Dental Stick, and some EVO Ferret Kibble (which I feed as a treat, to keep its percentage in his food low).

You can see my boy using the ball in the video below. It may look like he’s making a mess, but he always cleans up most every crumb- he just waddles around and eats his favorites first :)

Wellness Pure Delights Chicken and Lamb Jerky Cat Treats

On the first offer my ferret didn’t want the treat. Oh well. But a couple of days later I noticed him trying to climb the wall to steal the whole bag, so I offered a piece again. This time, and ever since, he’s loved it. Fickle ferret!

I like this treat for ferrets because the pieces are appropriately sized for a ferret (ie- small), and the ingredients and stats are superior to most ferret treats! His digestion has been less affected by these than by many ferret treats also :)
